Architectures for the Improvement of Living Conditions in the Third Age

Abstract:

In this communication the importance of architectural models for the elderly  of the current society is presented, as well as the perceptive aspects for a more habitable environment. This is a necessary connection for the new ways of life of people with partial or total dependence.

To that end, firstly, a historical analysis of the development of Residential Centers for the elderly is studied. Secondly, the classification of current models of residences is explained. Thirdly, an analysis of the design aspects which are necessary for this type of architectural spaces is determined. The study of physical spaces defined for the real needs of the activities of such a vulnerable group, is the essential basis for the development of this research.

The study deepens in the need of creating pleasant architecture centered on the person, as well as in the need of choosing the place where to live. The existence of different architectural environments and innovations of spaces in other European cities, allows a comparison with Spanish residential architectures.

This study has been carried out from the R+D+i Research project granted by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness in 2016 call "Societal Challenges”.
